Rev. Mason,
who was formerly Liberty’s Junior Church pastor was also a
son of Friendship Baptist Church. He was instrumental in having Liberty
work with the National Capital Day Care Center and also founded the
Women’s Club in January of 1970. He also revitalized the Pastor’s
Aid Club, the Scholarship Committee, the Public Relations Committee,
the New Members Club and appointed a chairperson for the Mortgage
Drive. In June 1975, Rev. Mason saw fit to tender his resignation to become
pastor-elect of one of our sister churches.
With loving
concern for our church, Liberty’s torch of enlightenment and salvation was carried
on under the loyal guidance of Rev. Frank L. White. Our son. Rev.
White, a dedicated man, secure in the love and will of God,
strengthened our weaknesses and did much to keep Liberty together. Under
his guidance, the Volunteer Club was reactivated, the Bible Study
Class and a Children’s Choir was
organized. Rev. White was unanimously elected the Assistant Pastor
of the Liberty Baptist Church in October 1976. At the same time Rev.
Richard M. Rice was elected pastor.
Rev. Rice
began his pastorate at the Liberty Baptist Church on December 1,
1976. The first family officially joined the
church on that same Sunday, the first Sunday Rev. Rice preached to the
congregation as pastor-elect. Rev. Rice was the former pastor of
the Second New Hope Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and
was formally installed, Sunday, February 20, 1977.
Many events have
highlighted Rev. Rice’s pastorate. In 1975, Liberty had a mortgage
of more than $40,000.00 when Sister Estelle
G. Harrison was appointed Chairperson of the committee to
relieve the church of this burden.
On November 26, 1978, the mortgage was officially burned. Since then, general improvements
have been made to the church and other building structures. A parking
lot in the rear of the church was purchased and a garage
was built to house the new van purchased in 1979. Also in 2003 another
van was purchased to replace the old one.
Another momentous occasion
in the life of Liberty was, on Saturday October
4, 1981, when an unprecedented event took place. Four sons
of the church were ordained into the gospel ministry: namely Rev. James
T. Williams, Rev. Eric Cooper, Rev. Dwight Dawson and Rev. Benjamin
Butler.
During the
year 1982, Liberty established the Community Services Food Bank under the guidance
of the late Rev. Benjamin Butler. Since that service has been
established much have done to reach out to the community. Presently
they are affiliated with the SHARE food program and have been for
the sixteen years that it has been in the DC area.
In March
1986, Rev. James Williams was elected Assistant to the Pastor to
assist and learn from the now aging Rev. Frank White. Liberty’s
theme is “WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS, THERE IS LIBERTY,”(II
Corinthians 3:17). Rev. Rice has added “SERVING ON THE CUTTING
EDGE OF HISTORY” to enhance our theme.
In November
1998, the church took on a project for general repairs to our church
and massive renovations to the lower auditorium and restrooms. We
have re-activated our Building Fund in hopes of alleviating this
debt. With the help of our Lord and Savior, we will succeed.
Over the
years, seven associate ministers have been called, licensed
and ordained into the gospel ministry. They are Rev.
Lawrence Anderson, Sr.; Rev. Calvin Nedd; Rev. William Jones,
Jr., who was ordained in Beaufort, South Carolina, where he
received his training while in the military; Rev. Jean Blanchard
who was ordained at the Doing It God’s Way Church, Washington
DC; Rev. Margaret Rev. Kidd, who was ordained under the Women’s
Evangelistic Conference of Washington DC and vicinity; Rev. Barbara
Melvin Duncan , who was licensed by Liberty and ordained under the
Methodist faith and Rev. Lawrence K. Floyd. In addition to the above
mentioned servants of our Lord; over these many years, we were blessed
to have as an Associate Minister at Liberty, Rev. William Shaw.
On June 18,
2005, Liberty experienced yet another milestone in our history,
the ordination of the first woman preacher, Rev. Barbara Melvin Duncan
and the youngest preacher at the age of 19, Rev. Lawrence K.
Floyd. Both of these preachers are an asset to our church. Rev. Lawrence K.
Floyd, serves as youth Pastor and director of Vacation
Bible School. Rev. Barbara Melvin Duncan heads the newly formed
Women’s Fellowship Ministry and serves as our first church administrator.
Rev. Duncan, along with Rev. James T. Williams, held our church together
while our Pastor took a much needed seven month sabbatical.
God has graciously returned Rev. Rice to us fully rested, revived
and restored many, many more years!
Most recently
, we have just embarked upon our latest renovation challenge, which
involves the total restoration of the youth center and the administration
building.
We thank
God for the pioneers of our Church and ask God to continue to bless us
as we reflect upon the past and look confidently toward the future.
